PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

In uganda, education is known to be free but several children still go to school without basic necessities like books, uniforms, and shoes is an extreme luxury. in rural places, the situation is even worse as children have to walk long distance and ultimately study under tree shade with minimum teacher attendance. with support from st. edwards parish, fr. achilles has been able to construct one new school and renovated the other. this has seen child attendance at school increase from 33% to 65% during the last 2 years.

CHALLENGES

In the rural nkokonjeru, the situation is still demanding. there are poor mostly mud-made or papyrus made structures where children study some of them in the comfort of tree shades irrespective of the season. there s still need to improve on the standard of both structures and teaching staff to be able to produce children that will take on the burden of improving their communities.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS

Being aware that the primary education system in uganda does not provide any survival skills and that most of the care takers are mostly grandmothers, st. edwards, plans to scale down school fees support into vocational skills training for ovc completing primary 7 and high school (senior 4) so that they are able to support themselves while at the same time preparing them to take care of their carers. short but profitable vocational trainings like nursery teaching, carpentry, tailoring, shoe repair and computer/radio repair among others will be identified and orphans and vulnerable children will be advised to take the option.
